While returning from an evening in Mammoth Lakes last night, a Mountain Lion ran in front of the car my friend and I were in. Unfortunately, the lion sustained fatal injuries. The Department of Fish and Game recovered the body and they were very surprised that this animal was not collared for indentification. They told us that almost all the lions in our area have been collared. After an initial examination, they were able to offer some preliminary info. It was a very healthy male, approximately 2 to 3 years old, with an estimated lenght of over 7 feet, and weighing over 60 pounds. The condition was exceptional and they will be able to use the pelt and skull for research. We both feel terrible about the outcome, especially since we have both lived here for years and have never seen a Mountain Lion close up. My friends car, a brand new Toyota Matrix, sustained major front end damage and we had to limp into Bishop. I hope my next encounter with a Mountain Lion is more positive.
