Is it "Saw-whet" or "Saw-Whet" or "Saw Whet"? Baffling in name, and unknown in status, a NSWO was seen on lower Rush Creek, by me, two days ago, while I counted willow stems for vegetation analysis. While that sentence was passive, the experience was not - I was able to sit down and stare at the owl, which was only eight feet away, for ten minutes while it stared at back at me. It seemed to be saying: "you missed a few stems here". While I have often heard them throughout California, I have never actually seen one, and I never dreamed my first sight would be on lower Rush, where they are very rare. A cool thing.
