HY male, observed for nearly a minute at five paces. Split eyering, gray head, clear chest, yellow/warm flanks, dusky wings but for big yellow/warm wing bar, foraging the way a redstart forages (there must be a name for this, maybe "petit-mal gleaning seizures"?). Interesting habitat, I was doing vegetation sampling in the gnarliest, darkest, meanest part of the riparian, with old old Shiny Willows that must have survived decades of dewatering. The first AMRE I have seen in California.
