It sounds like an American Magpie, also known as a Black-billed Magpie. It is a common bird at Mono Lake, they are opportunistic omnivores (meaning they will eat almost anything) and can be seen almost anywhere in the Basin. They are cool birds to watch and tend to flock during this time of the year.Check out a field guide and let me know if I guessed right.
