Fierce winds were streaking Mono Lake with foam and white caps this morning, and Eared Grebes and Ruddy Ducks could be seen from all the highway pullouts along the lake shore flapping their wings and running accross the water into the wind. Seeing ducks in flight is really no big deal. Seeing a grebe run across turbulent foamy waters and launch its awkward little body into the air, however, is a wonderful treat. As far as I can recall, Mono Lake is the only place I've ever seen grebes of any species actually in the air. If this weather holds, there may be several more days of good flying-grebe watching to be had along the shore, which is great consolation for the freezing howling winds.
