Driving by the Mono Inn (at the junction of 395 and Cemetary Road, just north of Mono Lake) this morning, I observed a large flock of corvids dining on a recent roadkill deer. Among the several ravens and many magpies, there were also at least six American Crows enjoying the fruit of our speeding ways. As I was getting back in the car, I glanced into the large willow just south and adjacent to the Mono Inn, and behold! an adult female Varied Thrush. Returning to Mono City for lunch, I stopped again at the Mono Inn. The crows, ravens and magpies were still feasting on frozen carrion, the Varied Thrush was still hopping about in the large willow and nearby cottonwoods, a Lincoln's Sparrow and Bewick's Wren were skulking in the brush, and the trees were dripping with scores of Audubon's Warblers.
