Today we banded a second year (1st breeding year) male Allen's Hummingbirds. The identification was determined using multiple characteristics and in-the-hand measurements including a tiny R5 (the outer most tail feather), R1 (innermost tail feather) was ever so slightly notched. The back was green with rufous sides and a few scattered irridecent feathers in the gorget. The bill was not corrigated, indicating an older bird. The bird overall averaged smaller with all its body parts including tail, wing, exposed culmen and "thin" primaries. Honestly, I wouldn't have believed it I hadn't banded it myself. There were some visitors that took pictures. Please post them if they turned out good. Thanks.
