This morning I was walking through the Pinyons near Rancheria Gulch, looking for fledglings of a Western Tanager nest in the area. Soon the male tanager was scolding me continuously and before long some Mountain Chickadees joined in on the scolding. Then came the Lesser Goldfinches, scolding me as well. Then the Oregon Juncos, then the Chipping Sparrows, then the Cassin's Finches, the House Finches, the White-breasted Nuthatches, the Juniper Titmice, the Black-throated Gray Warblers, one Green-tailed Towhee, one Cassin's Vireo and to top it all off, one female Broad-tailed Hummingbird. All in all, I was surrounded by 20-25 individuals of 13 species, all scolding me! There was a Gray Flycatcher pair in the area, but they decided not to join in, thank you GRFL's. After things settled down, I finally saw the tanager fledgling I was seeking, and also saw the female Broad-tailed hummer feeding her fledgling, very cool. Earlier I had also seen an Ash-throated Flycatcher, a nice day at the gulch.
