David Wimpfheimer and I led a "Big Day" trip during the Mono Lake Chautauqua, June 18, 2005. Both Bald Eagle adults were on top of their nest at June Lake. I moved the scope to a different angle, about 25' to the left (instead of being aligned with the nest) and to my excitement and surprise I could see a tiny, itty, bitty eaglet, probably no more than 4" to 5" long. It stretched it's cute little neck twice while I looked in the scope then it tucked it self back in again. It was difficult for some of our group to see the "outline" of the little eaglet face which was all there was to see after the stretch. Exciting for the people who could "see." According to Bartsche Miller "Bald Eagle nest is the first confirmed nest in the Mono Basin drainage since...? In Gaines' book they are mentioned as nesting on the upper Merced 70 years ago, and unknown for this region" Today, July 16, 2005 I was told there are two eaglets and they are now almost full size. Very exciting news!
