The last couple of days have brought an avalanche of new color. This will be the last update for a while, as basically the colors are afire in numerous locations and are peaking or soon to peak from locale to locale.
Assuming the wind behaves in the next 2-3 weeks there will be abundant color up and down the Eastern Sierra, from the June Lake Loop to Conway Summit.
June Lake Loop/Silver Lake: 50%, still a lot of red and orange to set in.
Conway summit: 50% and it's getting better everyday.
Lee Vining Canyon: shifting quickly from last week and now at approximately 25% in the lower canyon.
Lundy canyon: entrance is glorious, end of canyon is glorious, the middle still has a lot of color to developed yet--overall 35%.
Keep a look out for yellow jackets if you wander through the aspen on foot. This is the active time of year for these angry little vespinae. Their swarms and nests are not always obvious until you're below or on top of them. Dolichovespula arenaria (beautiful paper nests) and a ground-nesting Vespula sp. AACK!
