Hey David, It could be either species, they are both around. You can tell them apart by looking at the white feathers on each edge of their tail. Downy Woodpeckers have black dots on those white feathers (called rectrices), and Hairy Woodpeckers' outer rectrices are totally white. There are other ways to tell them apart as well, but that trick is the best way to do it.
