Yesterday morning (6/22/06) I walked east from Navy Beach for about an hour, mostly looking for early phalaropes. I came across 12 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS in a flock, feeding in a marshy lagoon (photos attached), as well as a single adult GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Ten BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were hanging out at the tufa east of Navy Beach. The osprey nest that has been here appears to be inactive and falling apart this year. At the end of the walk, I came to a beautiful cattail marsh with a colony of YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS (about 15 males, plus females and fledglings). I couldn't resist the urge to get some photos with the mountains in the background....Also lots of bluets around, and some Sympetrum meadowhawks that I didn't take the time to ID. This morning (6/23), at the end of Poole Power Plant road in Lee Vining Canyon, there were 2-3 singing NASHVILLE WARBLERS in the white firs, a couple BROWN CREEPERS, and a few GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, among others.
