Yesterday I flushed about 10 ducks (8 nondescript brown--Gadwall? 2 unidentified) from the lower end of the 4bii channel complex ponds. There was one brood of ducklings here (with at least 2 ducklings in it) and another up at the entrance to the channel in the flooded willows (with at least one duckling in it).
This channel currently gets water at high flows and is slated in the restoration plans to be rewatered year-round in order to restore waterfowl habitat. The perennial rewatering has been deferred and is being re-evaluated by the stream scientists. The presence of all those ducks reinforces the importance of this area for waterfowl, and hopefully will be valuable input to the rewatering decision.
