August 15-16 at East Navy Beach: 177 White-faced Ibis (maximum count) foraging in flooded grass which had recently become an isolated near-shore lagoon. This lagoon was not flooded with lake water, but with fresh or brackish water. We observed the birds splashing in the water, stretching their wings high above their heads, and probing in the flooded grass. Occasionally these birds would bring up a substantial, wriggling, fish-like prey, est. 2-3" long (GB spadefoot toad subadult tadpoles?!). Investigation of foraging site later revealed a rich stew of rat-tailed maggots (syrphidae larvae), but no toads or tadpoles were located. A marvelous spectacle with the setting sun, wind, and waves breaking the shoreline just beyond. This is by far the largest gathering of Ibis I've observed or heard of around Mono and pics couldn't capture the true number of these birds spread out in the flooded grass.
