Went birding at Crowley Lake today around the Layton Springs area and found a beautiful (likely adult male) RED-THROATED PIPIT! This is the first spring of this Siberian breeding species for California. While admiring the nice alternate plumages of the American Pipits (both the Sierra Nevada breeding race and the northern one) I heard it fly in - a very distinctive call I knew what it was before it landed. Nice cinnamon-orange face, thoat and breast. Relatively thick blackish streaks on sides of breast and flanks. Pale legs. Streaked back. Short tail, and squatty proportions compared to the American Pipits. Layton springs road goes down the the NE part of crowley lake from the benton crossing rd. It is north from there along the shore with 20 or so American pipits.
