Absurd birds in Lee Vining this morning. A hatch year Sharp-shinned Hawk, a male I think, guarding Santiago Escruceria's feeders. He let me within six feet, close enough to see blood on his bill and goldfinches in his eyes. But birds everywhere, a MacGillivray's Warbler in Kelly and Rena's kitchen. Rufus Hummingbirds playing inane king-of-the-feeder at the Latte Da, a Green-tailed Towhee outside my office, poaching from Banta's chicken coop, Eurasian Collared-doves afraid of their shadows, Black-headed Grosbeaks and Pinyon Jays, ravens and Brewer's Blackbirds, omnipresent Mountain Chickadees and Lesser Goldfinches, all between my house and the coffee shop.
