Right now there are 3 bears eating from the dumpsters behind Nicely's Restaurant in Lee Vining. Bears have been coming to the dumpsters every night and spreading garbage around the neighborhood. Right now there are three--one that I've scared away 1/2 dozen times with my car that keeps running to hide across the alley behind the Mono Lake Committee; one that sits next to the dumpster and climbs the tree when I get my car within 6 feet of it with the brights on it; and one that was walking fearlessly down the middle of the street to join the other two. Earlier two Nicely's employees taking out the trash threw a metal object at one so they could safely approach the dumpster. Tourists have been approaching very closely, and these bears have very little fear of humans. Unfortunately, due to improper trash storage, some or all of these bears could lose their lives. Hopefully no humans will.
