Black Phoebe perched along Hwy 395 near old power plant just south of Lee Vining: calling and fly- catching. Dippers have been actively singing along Mono Basin Creeks--heard and seen on both Mill and Rush Creek. They've been easily heard since mid-February, their chatter easily breaking the cold, white stillness of winter. The winter stone fly hatch also continues: small, narrow, charcoal-gray insects making their way over the snow. Their numerous enough you can't avoid stepping on them if you're skiing or snowshoeing near the creeks.
