THE
BATTLE FOR MONO LAKE
A story of Mono Lake's Past
A Stephen Fisher
Production in association with PBS Station KTEH
in San Jose, The Battle For Mono Lake is
the most comprehensive television special ever
made about the effort to save Mono Lake.
This hour-long documentary looks
at Mono Lake's many facets including the natural and
human
history of the Mono Basin, the growing body
of scientific research about the lake, the
importance of the public trust doctrine in
shaping water policy in the West, and the role of
the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power in
stream diversions which caused the lake to
shrink.
|
The Battle For Mono Lake
is hosted by actor
Richard
Hatch who teams up with scientists and others
to explore the Mono Basin.. Hatch kayaks in
Mono's briny water, re-creates Mark Twain's
journey to Paoha Island, treks across the exposed
lakebed to Negit Island, and observes as a
Kuzedika'a Paiute woman collects alkali fly pupae
as part of the tribe's ancient ways. |
Richard Hatch is
everyman, not a scientist or an environmentalist,
but an ordinary person who is curious about an
unusual and beautiful place. Through his
experiences, and interviews with attorneys,
scientists, water managers, indigenous peoples
and activists, the viewer discovers the many
people who were important to the Mono Lake issue.
