Alkali - a soluble mineral salt or a mixture of soluble salts, present in some soils, esp. in arid regions, and detrimental to the growing of most crops.

Anoxic - lacking oxygen.

Diatomaceous - consisting of or containing diatoms or their fossil remains.

Diurnally - occurring each day; daily

Hydrothermal - pertaining to the action of hot aqueous solutions or gases within or on the surface of the earth.

Poconip - freezing fog, usually within about 1000 feet in elevation of Mono Lake, when high pressure during the winter brings calm winds and cold temperatures.

Relicted area - the exposed bed of Mono Lake below an elevation of 6,417 feet above sea level, the pre-diversion level of Mono Lake in 1941. This is public land managed by the Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area or the Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve.

Riparian - of, situated, or dwelling on the bank of a river or other body of water.

Transpire - to emit or give off water vapor through the surfaces of leaves.

Tufa - a porous limestone formed from calcium carbonate deposited by springs. Only forms underwater.
