Ice and Snow on Mono Lake
2/1/07

There has been ice around the edges of Mono Lake frequently this winter. A quiet, windless snowstorm on Sunday morning dropped 2 inches of new snow on top of that ice, and now parts of the western embayment of Mono Lake look pretty solid, despite the thinness of the ice and its inability to hold a person's weight. When a soft breeze blows on the ice sheet, it moves, and slabs of ice pile up along the shoreline.

Shallow freshwater ponds near Mono Lake were frozen over the weekend, leading to some rare and treasured ice skating time. Like any other sport, ice skating can be dangerous, and extreme caution must be exercised when venturing out on natural frozen water. After careful testing of the ice, there was some fun skating on the ponds in the frozen hours around sunrise.
