Birding for students at Mono Lake

Summer and fall are ideal times to observe birds at Mono Lake. Eared Grebes, phalaropes, ducks, warblers, woodpeckers are just a sampling of the hundreds of birds species that can be found around Mono Lake.

The best place to watch birds and get close to them is at Mono Lake County Park. With a naturalist-guide and a spotting scope students will be able to get a good look at a variety of birds, their behavior and feeding.

Birds were a rallying point for the protection of Mono Lake. Mono Lake is part of the Western Hemispere Shorebird Reserve Network, and designated a Globally Important Bird Area by the American Birding Consevancy and Audubon.

Groups sizes of 20 or less are recommended due to limited space on the boardwalk trail. Walks last from one to two hours and are appropriate for all age levels.
