Korean Youth & Community Center
Los Angeles Water Conservation Council
The mission of the Korean Youth & Community Center is to serve the evolving needs of the Korean-American population in the greater Los Angeles area as well as the multi-ethnic
Koreatown community. KYCC has been coming to Mono Lake for many summers giving youth the opportunity to learn more about where their water comes from. KYCC ran their Ultra Low-Flush Toilet Distribution & water conservation program out of their environmental unit.
The Korean Youth and Community Center (KYCC), formerly known as the Korean Youth Center (KYC), was founded in 1975 as an outreach project of Asian American Drug Abuse Program (AADAP). In 1982, KYC announced its incorporation as an independent non-profit agency. Within a year, KYC was accepted by United Way as its first Korean agency. The Los Angeles civil unrest of 1992 brought a new urgency to Korean Americans' efforts to participation the broader diverse society. Insufficient sensitivity on the part of mainstream institutions made the community look internally for rebuilding the community. In response to the increasingly complex needs of a dynamic and growing community, KYCC expanded its role and services to encompass broader vision of community development and capacity building. Services now include urban environmentalism, affordable housing, and neighborhood economic development initiatives.
In 1992 the Board of Directors resolved to add "Community" to its name in order to recognize the agency's growth and expanded direction. KYCC grew from a primarily youth focused agency to the most innovative and the largest Korean-American community based organization in the United States.
