Volunteer Opportunities
Removing invasive plants
Invasive plant species are one of the biggest threats to the Mono Basin's health, particularly the health of its recovering streams. Species such as bouncing bet and wooly mullein are proliferating and out-competing native plants, threatening to leave a monoculture instead of the diversity of plant life that promotes healthy streams and ecosystems. If you are interested in helping with the hands-on work of manually removing these species, contact Project Specialist Carolyn Weddle at (760) 647-6595.
Planting and watering trees
The Mono Lake Committee partners with the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power to plant and water Jeffrey pine seedlings along recovering creeks. We are in need of volunteers to help with the planting each spring and watering every two weeks throughout the summer. If you are interested in participating in either planting or watering, please contact Project Specialist Carolyn Weddle at (760) 647-6595.
Cleaning up Highway 395
The Mono Lake Committee takes pride in its adopted stretch of Highway 395 just south of Lee Vining. Twice a year we pick up trash to help keep our scenic highway beautiful and clean. If you are interested in helping (approximately a five-hour commitment) contact Policy Coordinator Morgan Lindsay at (760) 647-6595 for highway clean up dates.
Helping at the annual High Sierra Fall Century bike ride
The High Sierra Fall Century is a spectacular 100-mile bike ride through the Eastern Sierra and the Mono Basin. The Mono Lake Committee's Mono Craters stop provides food, water, and enthusiasm to the cyclists as they pass by Mono Lake. Volunteers help with a variety of tasks including preparing food, providing drinks and snacks, answering questions, and cheering on the riders. In 2012 the ride will take place on Saturday, September 8. All volunteers receive a free Fall Century T-shirt. A time commitment of about five hours is needed between 8:00am and 1:00pm. If you are interested in volunteering for the Committee's Century stop, contact Office Director Rose Catron at (760) 647-6595. |
