Project Profile
The Mono Basin Outdoor Education Center will provide
resources, classroom space, and accommodation for multi-day programs in a
beautiful setting in the Eastern Sierra.
EDUCATION
Outdoor education is most effective when complemented by indoor learning
space. A combined classroom and learning laboratory will provide the ideal
setting for hands-on scientific investigation, natural history
collections, a reference library, and interpretive displays to complement
and inspire education in the field. Parker Creek meanders through the site
and students are only minutes away from exploration of Mono Lake and the
Sierra Nevada.
ACCOMMODATION
In summer, students will be able to enjoy streamside camping, while
bunkhouse accommodations will extend education programs into the cold
weather months. The Center will provide for multi-day learning experiences
with a dining hall, kitchen, shower, and bathroom facilities for up to 60
students overnight.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
The Center's design and construction will incorporate energy efficient
technology including passive solar lighting and heating, photovoltaic
power, and green building practices. Plans include an interpretive display
that highlights the benefits of sustainable building and renewable
technology.
SUPPORT FACILITY
Renovation of the existing historic ranch house will provide an
administrative office and will facilitate collaboration between scientists
and educators.
ENDOWMENT
An endowment will fund the operation of the Mono Basin Outdoor Education
Center, ensuring its success and longevity.
