What is our Vision?

The Mono Lake Committee envisions building a unique outdoor education center that prepares today's diverse youth for the challenges of tomorrow's water issues. We envision a learning center that uses one of the most dynamic outdoor classrooms in California to combine science-based outdoor learning with field research and watershed restoration. We envision a center that inspires stewardship of our limited water resources. The Mono Basin Outdoor Education Center will make this vision a reality.

The roots of this vision lie within an education partnership that brings Los Angeles youth to Mono Lake, the northern end of the City's far-reaching aqueduct. Each year, this program reveals an unseen world to hundreds of youth from diverse communities. For many it is the first time in their lives they have experienced the top of a Sierra peak, a cold mountain stream, the roaring spray of a waterfall, or the cool green canopy of life that follows this water to Mono Lake. For most, it is their first time learning in an outdoor setting.

This partnership will continue at the Mono Basin Outdoor Education Center. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the City of Los Angeles will provide a low-cost lease for the site, and the Mono Lake Committee will raise the funds needed for this project, build the facilities, and implement the education program.
