For Immediate Release Staff changes in the Mono Lake Committees Lee Vining office are propelling the organization forward in the new millennium. Long-time staffer Geoffrey McQuilkin has assumed the newly created position of Executive Director of Operations. Geoff will work as co-executive director of the Mono Lake Committee together with L.A.-based Frances Spivy-Weber, who continues as Executive Director of Policy. The newly created position reflects the significant work that lies ahead for the Mono Lake Committee in the Mono Basin and the importance of the Lee Vining office, said Co-Executive Director Frances Spivy-Weber, who recommended the administrative change. Geoff McQuilkin came to the Committee as a fresh-faced Harvard College graduate after volunteering on the Committees annual Bike-a-thon from L.A. to Mono Lake as a way of supporting his favorite saline lake. He became an intern in 1990, took on managing the Committees Information Center and Bookstore in 1992, and assumed the role of Communications Director in 1993. In early 1999, Geoff was promoted to Assistant Director and ultimately to Executive Director of Operations. The Committees ability to work effectively to protect the health of Mono Lake is also enhanced by the hire of Jeff Darlington, who is new to the Mono Basin but not new to the Sierra, as office director. Jeff has several years of project and office management under his belt, most recently with Electronic Data Systems, where his project team provided computerized claims services to health care providers. Other experience includes technical writing and editing, particularly related to the outdoors and environmental issues. Jeff grew up in Auburn on the west slope of the Sierra. After a year in Alaska, he relocated to the Mono Basin when his fiancée Christiana accepted a job in the Mono County Counsels office. The couple resides in June Lake. The Mono Lake Committee, a 15,000 member nonprofit group dedicated to the protection of Mono Lake, the restoration of its tributary streams, and public education, has been based in Lee Vining for more than twenty years. #
