July 17, 2000 Lake Tengiz, Slides and Investigation July 29th and August 19th Press Contact: For Immediate Release Join Martin Lenk, German conservationist, for a slide presentation on Lake Tengiz, a beautiful but threatened lake ecosystem in Central Kazahkstan. A paradise for birds, Lake Tengiz is one of the few intact steppe-lakes of the world. This saltwater lake and the surrounding freshwater lakes are about 12 times as big as Mono Lake, hosting the northernmost nesting population of the Greater Flamingo and more than 280 other bird species. The transition of the countrys economy and water diversion planning threaten the future of this unique lake. The presentation focuses on both the lake and the people living in the region. Martin Lenk has been working with the German Foundation for Nature Conservation (NABU) and their Kazakh partners for more than four years to improve the lake`s plight. Lake Tengiz, along with Mono Lake, is a member lake of Living Lakes, an international partnership of lakes working to solve the plight of lakes worldwide. This presentation is free and open to any interested travelers, students, or Eastern Sierra residents. The program begins at 7:00 PM, July 29th and August 19th in the Mono Lake Committee Information Center and Bookstore, located on Hwy 395 in Lee Vining. The presentation will last approximately one hour. # # # The text of this press release may be downloaded from www.monolake.org/press # # #
