Mono Lake Top Ten from 2008 … #4 The Los Angeles Water Plan

December 28th, 2008 by Mono Lake Committee Staff

4. The Los Angeles Water Plan

As reported in the 2008 Fall Mono Lake Newsletter, “This year Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa published a 20-year water strategy for Los Angeles that is the most dramatic demonstration of the City’s turn toward conservation.” Developed by the Mayor, the plan is central by the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power’s strategy for meeting new water demand in the city. The Los Angeles Water Plan “is a bold and visionary strategy for securing LA’s water supply today and in the future by developing a locally sustainable water supply,” said David Nahai, the Department’s CEO and General Manager.

The ambitious plan covers water conservation, water recycling, stormwater capture, and more. The Mono Lake story proved that water conservation is a viable way to balance the needs of people and the environment, and today the citizens of Los Angeles have much to be proud of in terms of water conservation. But, there is still more to be done, and programs like the Los Angeles Water Plan are an important part of doing everything we can for Mono Lake, and water sources around the world.

For setting out a clear and ambitious plan for water conservation in Los Angeles we give the Los Angeles Water Plan spot number four in the Mono Lake Top Ten from 2008.
