monolake.org now faster … and greener!

August 4th, 2009 by Greg, Information & Restoration Specialist

We’re excited to announce that we’ve switched to a new server for all of the Committee’s Websites! This means monolake.org, monobasinresearch.org, and leevining.com are now considerably faster to load their beautiful pictures and cool content. Not only that, all of the energy used by the new server is generated by wind power!

If you used to get frustrated with long load times in the past, check out things like the webcams and The Mono-logue and watch them fly now! Our old server was struggling with the new dynamic Website, crashing periodically, and was hacked into twice this year. We’re still tinkering with some features and getting things up to speed, but overall, the problems of the last eight months are a thing of the past, and we now have a renewable-powered, less-expensive, and faster server that should make your experience on our Websites much more enjoyable!

There are a few functions (such as updating your Guardians of the Lake credit card info) that we are still setting up on the new server, so we apologize for those not working yet. Please drop us a line if you find something that needs some attention, we’d really appreciate it.

Thank you, thank you for your website performance improvement!!! I really enjoy visiting the site, but the previous slow page load was no fun.
    Thanks again.

I find the focus much fuzzier on the new web cam. Can someone refocus it?

  3. Greg Reis Says:

Karen, the cameras are focused. If you are referring to the Lee Vining WebCam, the window it looks through is very dirty right now and we are hoping to clean it soon. Also, even when the window is clean, the left edge of the image is slightly distorted by the angle of the glass in relation to the lens, but this affects a very small portion of the image. Overall the new Webcams have vastly superior image quality when compared to the previous ones that we installed over ten years ago.

i just wanted to say , i just found your sight , and enjoy it very much .. when i was just 16 i worked in bishop at what was then the ” ecology center” , that was 1975 . it was my first time away from home at work anywere .. i was from san diego and the experance of moveing to the owens valley and working out in the great outdoors , has been memories to cherish all my life . furthermore ; even then the entire owens vally ,and ofcourse mono lake was being systematicly raped of its resources and even i as a youg man could see it ! . it just breaks my heart to know that it continues to this day … again thank you for the opertunity to enjoy all the pics and webcams , and the info from your sight ……….

On the image history page there are three webcams represented. All three are indicated to have the bottom image to be the latest image shot, but it can’t be right. At daybreak, the darkest images are at the bottom, not the top, of the column of photos . It is just a small distraction, but still a distraction. It would be great, also, if the entire image was sharp and that the left side of the photo was sharp. It seems to me that in a photo from the webcam taken in 2002 or 2001, the webcam was in a higher position. Is this correct?

  6. Greg, Information Specialist Says:

Ray – I’ve removed the confusing wording referring to the hourly archive–thanks for pointing out that it could be misconstrued to refer to the 50-minute archive. And both the Mono Lake WebCam and the Lee Vining WebCam have been in roughly the same position since they were first installed over a decade ago, with just small moves of a few inches in any direction.
