Two dozen bluebirds

April 1st, 2010 by Greg, Information & Restoration Specialist

Date of sighting: 3/28/10

On Sunday there were two dozen feathered epiphanies (see Gaines, 1988 for one of the most beautiful passages about a bird ever written) on the south shore between Navy Beach and Castle Tufa.

Yesterday at the end of Lee Vining Creek there were two meadowlarks, a Black Phoebe, a killdeer, and more.

On the lake there are lots of Ruddy Ducks and Eared Grebes. And the occasional Canada Goose at its soggy edges.

Greg, can you post a link to the Gaines article?

  2. Greg, Information Specialist Says:

No, it isn’t online, but in David Gaines, Birds of Yosemite and the East Slope, (1992 second printing), on p. 242, he wrote:

“Though they lack the dulcet songs of other thrushes, I fancy Mountain Bluebirds the loveliest of all Sierran birds. As they hover over flowery meadows or glide to perches atop rocks or trees, their delicate grace lifts the heart. The sun catches their plumage, turning it bluer than the mountain sky above. They are not merely birds; they are feathered epiphanies.”

Thanks Greg. That’s really wonderful. As an avid birder and Mono Lake lover, I am surprised I don’t have that book yet! It’s on my list.

It is a classic, however it has been out of print for a long time. Ideas for updating and reprinting it have been discussed for years. I don’t think it is on track to happen in the next year. A quick search on Amazon.com (click on this link and 5% goes to MLC) shows 2 new and 10 used at $130 and $65, respectively.

Thanks again Greg. After your last post I checked it out and saw that it was out of print. I am disappointed at best.
