Mono Basin ready for fishing opener: April 24, 2010

April 12th, 2010 by Geoff, Executive Director

Fishing opener April 24, is a busy time for Lee Vining and the region, but this year there’s quite a bit of local concern about whether streams and lakes will be stocked with fish. The Department of Fish & Game (DFG) has announced a new pre-stocking evaluation process that is causing quite a bit of consternation because it is holding up stocking efforts. The process requires reviewing each water for conflicts between trout and resident sensitive species.

Here in the Mono Basin, most routinely-stocked lakes and streams have already been cleared to be stocked, including Rush, Lee Vining, and Mill creeks; Lundy Lake; Grant Lake, and many others. (Mono Lake isn’t on the approved list, but the fish appreciate staying as far from Mono’s salty waters as possible).

Other major Mono County waters, like Crowley Lake and Bridgeport Reservoir are also approved for regular fish stocking; you can read the full DFG list here.

According to DFG, additional waters will be cleared for stocking by opening day. Check the DFG list for updated weekly information

Mono County Tourism & Film Commission just put up some more good information on the fish-stocking status in Mono County. Check it out! They’ve got some good links to fishing reports and rules and regulations on the same page as well.
