#1 on the top 10 of 2012: The new Mono Lake Committee storefront

December 31st, 2012 by Elin, Communications Coordinator

Number 1 on our Top Ten highlights list is the remodeled Committee storefront—a multi-year process culminating in the construction and grand re-opening this past summer!

The crowd gathered for the storefront grand re-opening in August! Photo by Arya Degenhardt.

Among the many highlights and wonderful moments of the process:

using boulders from the Simis Ranch to anchor the remodel in Mono Basin place and history,

• the meticulous care that went into reproducing Mono Lake’s shape in metal for the concrete map,

• the piece of woodworking art that local craftsman David Dore made for a sound barrier wall,

• serendipitously opening up the front stairs on the same day the Committee first opened it’s doors in 1979,

• using the water bottle filler and drinking fountain to reduce plastic bottle waste,

• seeing visitors arrive at the front door via the handicapped lift,

• the huge force of talented, diligent people who worked to get the remodel done,

• seeing the generosity of Grace de Laet in action—without her, none of it would have been possible.

The new storefront will draw people to the Committee and help make new friends for Mono Lake for years to come. Come visit on your next trip to Mono Lake to enjoy the new outdoor space! We look forward to seeing you in 2013 … happy New Year!
