Solar panels are going up!

Sierra solar lays the groundwork for the solar panels to be installed.

Sierra Solar lays the groundwork for the solar panels to be installed.

Jim, TJ, and Isabel from Sierra Solar arrived yesterday to begin installing our long-awaited solar panels for the Mono Lake Committee’s “icehouse” office building. The panels will generate more than enough power for the building, and the extra power generated will offset a portion of the Information Center & Bookstore usage.  The Committee is glad to be the second business in town to install solar panels on it’s rooftops—the Shell gas station across the street was the first. We’ll post more details soon and are very excited at this step that helps reduce our ecological footprint!

38 pounds of trash lighter

Students and leaders from Beyer High School along with OE staff were glad to help pick up trash along Lee Vining Creek.

Students and leaders from Beyer High School along with OE staff were glad to help pick up trash along Lee Vining Creek.

This past Saturday, 18 staff and volunteers spent the morning along Lee Vining Creek and Silver Lake picking up trash as part of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy‘s Great Sierra River Cleanup. Thirty-eight pounds of trash might not sound like a lot, but our efforts were worthwhile, since as in many places along waterways in the Eastern Sierra, the trash includes a lot of fishing line. Two years ago, Natalie Holt spent much of her summer volunteering for the Mono Lake Committee—leading tours and helping with a variety projects in the office. More recently, for her senior high school project, Natalie created  a seven-minute film called “Environmental Identity,” featuring our very own Communications Coordinator Elin Ljung!

In the film Natalie interviews Elin, a park ranger, an Earth First activist, and the owner of a green products store, asking what motivates, inspires and concerns (more…)

This morning 13 Committee staff and Mono Lake volunteers planted 100 Jeffrey Pine seedlings near Rush Creek. After many days of overcast weather, it was a beautiful sunny morning and good to be outdoors. The recent rainy weather made digging holes for the new trees easy—the toughest job was (more…)

Fishing Season opens Saturday April 25th

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 by Erika, Office Director

At the Lee Vining Chamber of Commerce meeting last Thursday, local resident Martin Strelneck gave an update on conditions for Eastern Sierra Trout Fishing Season Opener, which is this Saturday, April 25th. Mr. Strelneck is also a staff writer for Western Outdoor News; check out his overview on local conditions. Keep an eye on the road and weather conditions, as winter-like conditions may be back this weekend. And if you’re planning to visit Crowley Lake, be aware of the invasive Quagga mussel and remember that boat inspections are required. Be safe and have a great weekend!

Mark Ruffalo conserves water with Mono Lake water bottles!

Thursday, February 5th, 2009 by Erika, Office Director

One afternoon several weeks ago Elin and I were in the main Mono Lake Committee office when the phone rang. Elin answered and soon passed the call on to me letting me know it was someone working on a film in Los Angeles who had a question for us. Assuming it would be a permit question I would need to pass on to State Parks, it was a fun surprise when I got on the line and James Burkhammer told me he was working on a film with actor and director Mark Ruffalo
