Wild & Scenic Film Festival–Los Angeles just a week away

In just one week the Mono Lake Committee will be hosting the first ever Wild & Scenic Film Festival in Los Angeles!

Eleventh annual Bird Chautauqua – check it out

Have you heard? Mono Lake is for the birds … the Mono Basin Bird Chautauqua planning team is hard at work putting together the eleventh annual weekend. Make sure June 15–17, 2012 is marked on your calendar.

Gathering prizes for the 2012 Free Drawing

It’s that time of year again—time to start gathering prizes for the 2012 Free Drawing—one of the Mono Lake Committee’s largest fundraisers. Thanks to the overwhelming support from our members and visitors, last year’s Free Drawing was a huge success!

This year I have been diligently working on gathering a collection of fabulous prizes for the 2012 Free Drawing. The prize list for this fundraiser will go out through the mail as well as in our Information Center & Bookstore. Exactly how many people will (more…)

There are only three spaces left in the Mono Lake Committee’s annual winter photography field seminar coming up January 13–15 … sign up now to take advantage of the photo opportunities this quiet, beautiful season offers! #1: The Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve is open!

By now I’m sure you’ve guessed it … our #1 highlight for Mono Lake in 2011 was getting the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve removed from California’s state park closure list. It was, first and foremost, a group effort—with Mono Lake Committee members playing a key role in writing and signing thousands of letters and petitions that got the attention of key decision-makers in Sacramento as they were hand-delivered to their offices each week. Finding creative solutions (the working mantra of the Mono Lake Committee) played a key role in the effort, and we are enthusiastic about The Bodie Foundation stepping up (more…)

#2: The new Mono Lake Story film

One of the classic Mono Lake Committee history stories starts something like this … in the late 1970s, Mono Lake Committee founder David Gaines toured tirelessly around California with a carousel of slides and a call to help a dying lake—talking to anyone who would listen. Well, you know the rest of the story … so, clearly, it worked. To this day, we meet people who tell the tale of how they learned of the plight of Mono Lake and joined in the effort through one of Gaines’ slideshows. We continue the tradition by  (more…)
