The Mono Lake Committee goes solar … again!

Thursday, November 8th, 2012 by Angie, Project Specialist

The Mono Lake Committee has just taken another huge step in our efforts to reduce our ecological footprint.

The south-facing roof of our bookstore building is now completely covered with 33 photovoltaic solar panels, bringing our total solar panel count up to 42. Local business Sierra Solar installed panels on our “ice house” office building in 2010 and came back to complete the solar energy transformation. Committee buildings are now completely maxed out on solar panel surface area and are well on their way to becoming (more…)

Adopt-a-Highway cleanup a success

Thursday, November 1st, 2012 by Erica, Project Specialist

Three dedicated volunteers and two Mono Lake Committee staff members helped clean the Committee’s adopted mile of Highway 395 recently. The crew met on Friday, October 26, donned fluorescent vests and leather gloves, and hit the road under sunny skies.

The Committee adopted a section of  Highway 395 south of Lee Vining in 1997 and leads two to four cleanups annually. A lot more recyclable materials were found this time along with the usual assortment of things that blow out of or fall off moving vehicles. All in all, six bags of litter and one bag of recycling were gathered. It’s nice to leave the road spiffed up before the winter winds blow! A big thanks to volunteers Rich & Cathy Foye and Rebecca Watkins.

Mono Basin winter photography field seminar

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012 by Elin, Communications Coordinator

Winter at Mono Lake: a lifting morning poconip fog, tufa towers jacketed in snow and reflected in the mirror of the lake’s surface, ice sculpting crystalline filigree along creek and lake banks.

This photography seminar will be based in Lee Vining and will explore locations along the lake to photograph the serenity and beauty that is the Mono Basin in winter. (more…)

A flight for the birds: Eared Grebe aerial survey

Sunday, October 21st, 2012 by Erica, Project Specialist

On Saturday morning, October 13, a small plane flew over Mono Lake. It banked multiple times, and then flew across the lake over and over. A sightseer? No, this was scientific research in action—the annual Eared Grebe aerial photo survey!

Saturday, October 20th, 2012 by Angie, Project Specialist

Visitors to the Mono Basin and Long Valley area in the next two weeks can expect to see golden aspen trees, snow dusted peaks, and something quite unusual—a lone helicopter flying only 500 feet from the ground.
