Another state park off the closure list!

Friday, February 10th, 2012 by Elin, Communications Coordinator

Congratulations to friends and supporters of South Yuba River State Park—on Wednesday, February 8 it joined eight other state parks that have come off the closure list!

The South Yuba River.

Similarly to the effort that removed Mono Lake’s state park from the closure list, South Yuba River State Park’s allies collected 10,000 letters of support for the park, got the Nevada County Board of Supervisors unanimously on board, and are working on a parking fee collection strategy to bring funding to the park. Grassroots organizing, practical solutions, and making our voices heard is working—save our state parks!

Mono Lake visitor center gets closer to hooking up solar

Monday, January 23rd, 2012 by Arya, Communications Director

Here’s a promising update for those of you following the recent story in the Los Angeles Times regarding dozens of solar energy facilities with national parks and forests that are waiting for grid connections while Southern California Edison hashes out contracts.

#1: The Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve is open!

Saturday, December 31st, 2011 by Arya, Communications Director

By now I’m sure you’ve guessed it … our #1 highlight for Mono Lake in 2011 was getting the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve removed from California’s state park closure list. It was, first and foremost, a group effort—with Mono Lake Committee members playing a key role in writing and signing thousands of letters and petitions that got the attention of key decision-makers in Sacramento as they were hand-delivered to their offices each week. Finding creative solutions (the working mantra of the Mono Lake Committee) played a key role in the effort, and we are enthusiastic about The Bodie Foundation stepping up (more…)

#4: Big strides towards a 21st century aqueduct

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 by Arya, Communications Director

Here in the office we call it the Collaborative Aqueduct Modernization & Management Plan, or CAMMP for short. But when we say things like, “Geoff, Lisa, and Morgan are CAMMP-ing,” it’s not what it sounds like. CAMMP is a State Water Board mandated series of facilitated meetings embarked upon by the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, the California Department of Fish & Game, California Trout, the State Water Board-appointed Stream Scientists, and the Mono Lake Committee with the goal of working through the details of implementing the scientific streamflow prescriptions issued in 2010 and the associated aqueduct modernization necessary for the aging infrastructure to be able to reach the restoration goals at Mono Lake.

So … what does all that mean? It means that (more…)

#8: Fun events connecting ideas, people, and Mono Lake

Saturday, December 24th, 2011 by Arya, Communications Director

Number 8 of the top 11 of 2011 is actually recognition of three major celebrations—the Andrea Lawrence Award Dinner, the Mono Basin Bird Chautauqua, and the Defender of the Trust Award ceremony. Yee-haw! (more…)

Mono Lake Reserve celebration

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 by Morgan, Policy Coordinator

A cheery group of Mono Lake friends braved the December cold at Old Marina to celebrate the removal of Mono Lake’s state park from the closure list.

Mono Lake friends celebrated with cake and many toasts to the next 30 years for the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve.

State Park staff, Bodie Foundation board members, Mono Lake Committee staff and board members, hardworking volunteers, (more…)

Celebrating state parks in the dark

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 by Elin, Communications Coordinator

On Thursday, December 1, California State Parks announced that the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve is off the closure list—wonderful and long-awaited news!

Smartphones are key to working during a power outage: Arya found the State Parks' press release on her phone as Bartshe and Geoff work on theirs in the background.

In a strange twist of fate, we got the call via cell phone since we had lost power along with much of the Eastern Sierra a few hours before. Relying on the few smartphones in the office, (more…)
