In the event of a federal government shutdown this weekend, popular visitation sites at Mono Lake will remain open, including South Tufa, Old Marina, and County Park. Our Info Center & Bookstore will also be open Mon-Thurs 9am–5pm and Fri-Sun 9am–7pm. Learn more at monolake.org.

Happy Save Mono Lake Day! Today we're celebrating 29 years of Mono Lake's protection. On September 28, 1994 the California State Water Resource Control Board issued Decision 1631, amending the City of Los Angeles’ water licenses “to establish fishery protection flows in streams tributary to Mono Lake and to protect Public Trust resources at Mono Lake and in the Mono Lake Basin.”

There was urgency in this action back in 1994, and today, as we arrive at the 29th anniversary of this history-making decision, the lake is still 9 vertical feet below the Public Trust lake level—a problem that looms large for the lake, its unique ecosystem, its millions migratory and nesting birds, and the people who care for and rely on this special place.

The sunsets at #MonoLake have been so good this month! Project Specialist Fiona Travers got this gorgeous photo on a recent evening at #SouthTufa. Our last 6:00pm South Tufa tour for the year happens tomorrow, September 24. After that the tours will take place at 1:00pm on weekends only.

Walker Lake has come up more than 15 feet this yea

Walker Lake has come up more than 15 feet this year, so it's time to celebrate! Join in the Walker Lake Rehydration Celebration, this Saturday from 8:00am to 2:00pm. At Monument Beach (about 12 miles north of Hawthorne, Nevada) there will be free canoe tours, a rehydration ceremony, speakers, booths, beach activities like gyotaku fish prints, a raffle, and food for purchase. Long live Walker Lake!
