DESCRIPTION:2022 Geology Field Seminar Lottery\n\n\n\nDue to the overwhelming popularity of the Geology of the Mono Basin Field Seminar\, this year we will be offering a lottery system for this seminar only. First-time registrants for this seminar will get priority; however\, there will be a limited number of spots for past attendees as well. \n\n\n\nThe lottery application will ask the following: \n\n\n\nName (One lottery entry per person permitted\, and lottery entries are not transferable)EmailGroup size (up to 4)Have you\, or anyone in your group\, attended the Geology of the Mono Basin Field Seminar in the past?\n\n\n\nThe lottery will open on February 17\, 2022 at 9:00am PST at the same time as registration for all other Field Seminars and the lottery will close on February 22\, 2022 at 11:59pm PST. You can enter once at any time during this window. Everyone will be contacted on February 23\, 2022 by email with the results of the lottery. If your lottery entry is successful\, you will have until February 25\, 2022 to complete your registration. If your lottery entry is not successful\, you will be notified of your position on the waitlist (determined by random draw) and if you would like to accept that spot on the waitlist. \n\n\n\n\n From volcanic craters to glacial moraines\, earthquake faults to tufa towers\, the Mono Basin displays some of the most unique\, spectacular\, and accessible geology anywhere in the world. This seminar\, consisting of field visits to the premier sites\, will present in understandable fashion the geologic stories of the Mono Basin. Greg Stock is the first ever Yosemite National Park geologist. We will be walking up to three miles a day\, some of which will be over uneven terrain\, off trail\, and will include stepping up and over obstacles. This type of walking requires good balance\, some agility\, and stamina. Be prepared for short\, steep sections of trail. This seminar includes a short but challenging hike at altitude.

DESCRIPTION:Discover bubbling springs\, alkali flies\, brine shrimp\, underwater tufa towers\, migrating birds\, and crystalline waters\, all from the unique vantage point of a canoe. \n\n\n\nGuided canoe tours provide a unique look into the ecology and geology of this high desert lake. No canoe experience is necessary and we provide all the equipment. Our experienced canoe guides will share with you some of Mono Lake’s unusual natural history as well as the story about efforts to protect this nearly million-year-old lake. When you arrive at Navy Beach\, check in at the silver Mono Lake Committee Toyota truck.\n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\n\n\n\nHow do I get to South Tufa?\nFrom Highway 395 turn onto Highway 120 East (located five miles south of Lee Vining and 25 miles north of Mammoth Lakes). Follow the signs for South Tufa. Drive five miles on Highway 120 East and turn left at the sign for South Tufa. Continue straight onto a one-mile-long gravel road and park in the South Tufa parking lot. Plan to park at South Tufa 45 minutes before your tour launch time. \n\n\n\n\nDo I have to pay for parking?\nParking is free for canoe tour participants. There will be a white and green hand-painted Canoe Tours sign on your immediate right as you enter the parking lot. You must collect your free canoe tour parking pass from the envelope on the back of the sign and display it on your dashboard to receive free parking. \n\n\n\n\nWhere do the canoe tours launch from?\nThe canoe tours launch from Navy Beach\, approximately a 15-minute walk from South Tufa. When you arrive at Navy Beach\, check in at the silver Mono Lake Committee Toyota truck. \n\n\n\n\nWhat should I bring for the tour?\nIn addition to sturdy water shoes (Chacos\, Tevas\, or other water sandals)\, please bring sun protection (sun hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses)\, plenty of drinking water\, and a plastic bag or dry bag to keep your camera or binoculars from getting wet. \n\n\n\n\nWhat is the canoe tour cancellation policy?\nIf you’d like to cancel your reservation\, you must call (760) 647-6595 at least 24 hours in advance of your canoe tour launch time in order to receive a refund. If you cancel within 24 hours\, or arrive late and miss your tour\, you will be charged for the full amount. \n\n\n\n\nWhat if there is inclement weather?\nThere is a chance that your canoe tour will be cancelled due to unsafe wind conditions on the lake. The decision to cancel a tour is made at the time of the tour in response to conditions on the lake\, so unfortunately we cannot notify you in advance.
