DESCRIPTION:The Mono Basin Bird Chautauqua brings birders together to enhance appreciation and understanding of the Mono Basin’s diverse and abundant bird life and to educate the public about this area’s value to birds and people.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Chautauqua\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year is the 22nd annual Mono Basin Bird Chautauqua—a weekend celebration of birds in the Mono Basin! It is our mission to enhance appreciation and understanding of the Mono Basin’s diverse and abundant bird life and to educate the public about this area’s value to birds and people. The Mono Basin is known worldwide for its immense populations of migratory and nesting birds. This year we are celebrating the 35th anniversary of Mono Lake becoming a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network Site of International Importance. Mono Lake is also designated as a globally significant Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy and Audubon Society. The natural beauty of this area and its diverse bird life provide the ideal backdrop for the Mono Basin Bird Chautauqua. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis year’s featured bird\, the Northern Pygmy-Owl\, was illustrated by Rosa Cox.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to the Chautauqua partners & sponsors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCalifornia State Parks and the Mono Lake Committee are the Chautauqua’s organizing partners. Supporting partners include the Inyo National Forest\, National Park Service\, Sierra Forever\, Friends of the Inyo\, Eastern Sierra Bird Alliance\, Bodie Foundation\, Eastern Sierra Land Trust\, Yosemite Conservancy\, Sierra STEM\, Great Basin Bird Observatory\, DeChambeau Creek Foundation\, and Whitebark Institute. Lee Vining High School\, the Mono Basin History Museum\, and the Lee Vining Women’s League are community collaborators. DESCRIPTION:We are putting a pause on the Tioga Pass Run in 2026 to focus on the upcoming State Water Board hearing to raise Mono Lake.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Tioga Pass Run survey\n\n\n[gravityform id=”15″ title=”false” description=”false”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the camaraderie of the Tioga Pass Run: 3\,200 feet of elevation gain over a 12.4-mile-long course along the shoulder of one of the most scenic highways in the country. Proceeds from the run benefit the Mono Lake Committee.\n\n\n\n Photo by Bartshe Miller. \n\n\n\n\n\nTioga Pass Run schedule\n\n\n\n6:00am – Packet pickup/registration opens\n\n\n\n7:00am – Start time for walkers\n\n\n\n8:00am – Start time for runners\n\n\n\n12:00noon – Course cut-off time\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the run\n\n\n\nLocated on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range\, Tioga Pass is the eastern gateway to Yosemite National Park. The start line is in the town of Lee Vining at an elevation of 6\,781 feet above sea level and the finish line is at the top of Tioga Pass at 9\,945 feet. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis run allows you to truly enjoy the beauty of the Eastern Sierra from Mono Lake to Tioga Pass. Proceeds from the Run benefit the Mono Lake Committee. \n\n\n\nBe prepared for any weather\, from warm late summer temperatures to early winter snow flurries. Weather conditions can vary greatly from the start to finish line. There will be aid stations at miles 3\, 6\, 9\, and the finish. An ADA compliant portable toilet will be available at aid station 2 at the 6 mile mark. He cheered on the Tioga Pass Run finishers for the first 13 years of the run\, and is with us in our memories\, reminding us to tread carefully on the delicate alpine environment of Tioga Pass.
