SUMMARY:Mountain Botany & Ecology
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar we will explore the Mono Basin’s varied plant communities\, from the shore of Mono Lake to the forests and meadows at the high elevations of Lee Vining Canyon. We’ll learn the basics of flower and plant anatomy and how to use a plant key\, discuss soils and geology\, and examine the adaptations that enable plants to tolerate the extremes of mountain environments. Michèle Slaton is an Ecologist with the US Forest Service and has lived in the Eastern Sierra since She has worked as a botanist in Colorado\, Death Valley National Park\, and the Inyo National Forest. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nview itinerary\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\nDate: July 29–31\, 2022 \n\n\n\nInstructor: Michèle Slaton \n\n\n\nPrice: $235 for members / $250 for the public \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration: Begins February 17\, 2022 at 9:00am PST for Mono Lake Committee members. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact the field seminar team by email or phone at (760) 647-6595. \n\n\n\n\n\nActivity level: MODERATE \n\n\n\nThis seminar’s activity level: moderate. We will be walking up to two miles a day at a leisurely pace\, much of which will be over uneven terrain and off trail. This seminar includes ample crouching\, squatting\, kneeling\, and sitting on the ground to see flowers up close with a hand lens. Participants should expect to be getting up and down most of the day\, which is surprisingly tiring.

SUMMARY:Natural History at the Edge of the Sierra (FULL)
DESCRIPTION:The Natural History Institute defines natural history as the “…practice of intentional\, focused attentiveness and receptivity to the more-than-human world\, guided by honesty and accuracy.” Rather than focusing on one specific aspect of a singular creature of interest\, natural history pays attention to all the goings-on in front of the observer. On this day trip\, we will make our way up the east slope\, stopping at several locations to connect with all that we may find. Throughout the day\, we will have moments of quiet reflection to allow ourselves to ponder the grandeur and the minutia that envelops us in this amazing place: the edge of the Sierra. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nview itinerary\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWAITLIST\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\nDate: August 6\, 2022 \n\n\n\nInstructor: Nora Livingston \n\n\n\nPrice: $130 for members / $145 for the public \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration: Begins February 17\, 2022 at 9:00am PST for Mono Lake Committee members. \n\n\n\nQuestions?
