Here’s a glimpse of some of the #avalanche contr

Here’s a glimpse of some of the #avalanche control work that Caltrans has been doing in order to get Highway 395 open again north of Lee Vining. This avalanche is the result of a controlled release from the Gazex avalanche control system. Caltrans uses this system installed high above the highway to mitigate avalanche hazards, and on March 12 they deliberately triggered additional avalanches after the large atmospheric river on March 9-11 brought even more heavy, wet snow to the area. The Eastern Sierra community has been busily preparing for the next round of atmospheric river storms. We've been shoveling roofs, setting up sand bags, and clearing as much ice and snow as possible. Some structural damage has already happened due to the weight of the snowpack (pictured), and the incoming rain will make the snow even heavier. Please do not plan to travel to the Mono Basin at this time. Mono County is in a state of emergency and many roads are closed. #CAwx

All of the highways are closed due to avalanches and historic snowfall. Our Info Center & Bookstore will also be closed as long as Hwy 395 is closed.
