Here’s a glimpse of some of the #avalanche contr Here’s a glimpse of some of the #avalanche control work that Caltrans has been doing in order to get Highway 395 open again north of Lee Vining. This avalanche is the result of a controlled release from the Gazex avalanche control system. Caltrans uses this system installed high above the highway to mitigate avalanche hazards, and on March 12 they deliberately triggered additional avalanches after the large atmospheric river on March 9-11 brought even more heavy, wet snow to the area. There is no estimated opening date for the highway yet. Photo courtesy of Sally Miller, obtained using a telephoto lens well away from the avalanche zone.

Some structural damage has already happened due to the weight of the snowpack (pictured), and the incoming rain will make the snow even heavier. Please do not plan to travel to the Mono Basin at this time. Mono County is in a state of emergency and many roads are closed. #CAwx

On Wednesday the State Water Board held a public w On Wednesday the State Water Board held a public workshop in response to our request that the Board take emergency action due to Mono Lake’s perilous low level. The five-hour workshop, which was attended by 365 people, added up to a strong case for the Board to initiate the hearing process necessary to direct more water to Mono Lake.
