What’s better than spending a summer working at Mono Lake? Arguably, nothing!

Applications for the Mono Lake Committee’s summer 2016 seasonal jobs are now posted, so if you want to canoe, lead interpretive programs, go bird watching, work in our beautiful Information Center & Bookstore, and learn all there is to know about Mono Lake, check them out.

Hiring begins now and positions are open until filled. If you are interested, make sure to apply early. If you have any questions regarding the positions, please read the job description for the appropriate person’s contact information.

Results are in for the 35th annual Tioga Pass Run

Last Sunday, September 13, 102 runners and walkers made their way up 12.4 miles of the grueling and scenic Tioga Pass, during the 35th annual Tioga Pass Run. They started in front of the Mono Lake Committee in Lee Vining and finished at the entrance to Yosemite National Park, gaining 3,165 feet in elevation along the way.

Patrick Parsel of South Lake Tahoe won overall with the time of 1:29:43, close to ten minutes faster than the fastest time last year. Jessica Francois, Lee Vining local and former Mono Lake Committee staff member, was the first female finisher, beating (more…)

Registration open for 2015 Tioga Pass Run

Registration is now open for the 2015 Tioga Pass Run!

Register before June 6 for the early-bird rate of $40. Entrance fees increase to $50 after that, and then to $60 on August 6 through race day.

The race will be held on Sunday, September 13, and all proceeds from the run will benefit the Mono Lake Committee.

Join the camaraderie of the Tioga Pass Run: 3,164 feet of elevation gain over a 12.4-mile course along the shoulder of one of the most scenic highways in the country! The run starts in Lee Vining at an elevation of 6,781 feet and finishes at the Tioga Pass entrance station to Yosemite at an elevation of 9,945 feet.

Love Mono Lake? Volunteer this summer!

The Mono Lake Committee, US Forest Service, Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association, California State Parks, and the Bodie Foundation are teaming up to sponsor the twelfth season of our Mono Lake Volunteer Program this summer. Volunteers will have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and share their knowledge of the Eastern Sierra. It’s a great way to learn about Mono Lake while getting to know fellow volunteers and giving back to the area.

Unprecedented February wildfires ravage Eastern Sierra communities

Several communities in the Eastern Sierra have been suddenly and tragically affected by wind-driven wildfires that started last Friday, February 6.

South of Lee Vining, the Round Fire destroyed 40 residences and damaged five more in the Paradise and Swall Meadows area near Highway 395 north of Bishop. Fire crews and other rescue personnel rushed to evacuate residents and contain the fire, but because of high winds and the extremely dry, unprecedented February conditions, containment of the fire was (more…)

Mono Lake Committee Information Center & Bookstore opening late on Tuesday

The Mono Lake Committee Information Center & Bookstore will be opening at 11:00am on Tuesday, October 29. Regular hours of operation—9:00am to 5:00pm every day—will resume on Wednesday, October 30.

“See It Again for the First Time” gallery show opening

"Lee Vining Canyon" by Nicola Voorhees.

“See It Again for the First Time,” a watercolor gallery show by Nicola Voorhees, is on display at the Mono Lake Theater & Gallery now through January 31, 2014.

Those who have had the pleasure of viewing Nicola’s brightly colored landscape watercolor paintings will understand the name behind the show. Pinks, blues, and bright greens really do allow one to see Mono Lake and the Mono Basin again as if for the first time.

Meet Nicola and view her paintings at the gallery opening hosted by the Mono Lake Committee this Saturday, August 31 from 4:30–5:30pm.

All are invited to the gallery opening, so come and enjoy the artist and her work. Light refreshments will be served.

“Traveling the 38th Parallel” presentation and booksigning

David and Janet Carle, co-authors of Traveling the 38th Parallel: A Water Line Around the World, will be doing a presentation and book signing at the Mono Lake Committee’s Theater & Gallery this Friday, July 26 at 4:00pm.

The presentation includes photos from their travels around the world as they explored environmental issues shared by many countries at the same latitude as Mono Lake.

David and Janet shared the first Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve ranger position, and have been active community members since arrving in the Mono Basin. David has written multiple fiction and non-fiction books about the area including Mono: A Novel, Spotting Scope, introductions to earth, water, and fire in California, Mono Lake Basin: Images of America, My Visit to Mono Lake, and others. Janet runs the Mono Lake Volunteer program, teaching others to interpret Mono Lake to our many visitors.

We hope to see you on Friday at 4:00pm in the Theater & Gallery!

In celebration of Virginia Clark’s latest edition of Guide to Highway 395: Los Angeles–Reno, the Mono Lake Committee is hosting her for a book signing on Saturday. Come visit with the author and have her sign your copies of the numerous regional and local books she’s written, all outside at our new storefront!
