December 10th, 2008 by Mono Lake Committee Staff

This post was written by Erika Obedzinski, 2008 Office Director.

Thank you to all of you that have been doing some of your holiday shopping through the Mono Lake Committee! We appreciate the support this generates both in getting the word out to others about Mono Lake and the revenue it generates, especially in this tough economic time.

We’re all set up to get orders out quickly, so if there’s something you’d like to buy through the Committee’s online store, or from … more »

PBS segment: Polluted rain runoff

December 7th, 2008 by Arya, Communications Director

I just caught this spot on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, which I listen to on the radio, but you can see, read, or listen here. It feels unusually dry in Lee Vining right now so we’re all crossing our fingers for snow. In rainy areas it’s … more »

Mono Basin Hydrology Update for 12/4/08

December 5th, 2008 by Greg, Information & Restoration Specialist

This morning dawned frosty and clear on a rising Mono Lake. Today’s elevation is 6382.19 feet above sea level. This is about a tenth of a foot higher than it was a month ago, when it reached its lowest point for the year.

This seems to answer the question posed today in an email, “Do you really think it’s reached it’s lowest point of the winter and that it won’t continue to drop again till we get significant snow?” But a drop this month isn’t impossible… … more »

A hard-won Thanksgiving Trout

November 27th, 2008 by Mono Lake Committee Staff

The Mono Basin was dappled in coats of snow and low clouds this Thanksgiving morning, and my thoughts were on turkeys and potatoes and friends. I was jarred out of all other thoughts when I gazed out onto Grant Lake Reservoir and saw an adult Bald Eagle thrashing around far out in the freezing waters.

Watch Mono Lake on KCET Sunday Nov 23!

November 23rd, 2008 by Geoff, Executive Director

Tonight, November 23, 2008, is a big night for Mono Lake. It will be featured in a full hour on KCET (the Los Angeles PBS station) in the show California’s Gold! Huell Howser’s exploration of Mono Lake will be on at 7:00 pm. It’s particularly fun because the show includes both his visit of 15 years ago and his return this summer to see the how our hard-won implementation of the lake’s protection is proceeding.

I enjoyed spending the day with Huell. I think … more »

Fall staff working retreat

November 21st, 2008 by Arya, Communications Director

Yesterday was our annual fall staff retreat; the Committee staff’s annual meeting to touch base with the strategic plan and to have a chance to talk about the year behind us and plan for the year ahead all together. The word “retreat” may conjure something more luxurious than … more »

Though most of our breeding California Gulls have left the Mono Basin for fishier coastal waters, we do have one most unusual gull keeping us company: a young Western x Glaucous-winged Gull hybrid. The parent species both breed on the Pacific coast and rarely venture inland. … more »

November 20th, 2008 by Greg, Information & Restoration Specialist

This just in my inbox from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about an “EPA Watershed Academy Webcast.” Innovative strategies are being used in Southern California and the City of Los Angeles in order to reduce stormwater runoff and increase groundwater recharge. This has the potential to reduce imported water supplies from places like Mono Lake. Read on for the details of the webcast. … more »
