California Gull research at Mono Lake continues! T California Gull research at Mono Lake continues! Thanks to Point Blue for this great update. (Please note, permits were obtained to use drones to conduct this research. Drones are not allowed above Mono Lake.) 📷 @pointblue_conservationscience

From @pointblue_conservationscience:

Scenes from Mono Lake! Our scientists were out in the field last month collecting data on Mono Lake’s California Gulls. Did you know that Point Blue has been surveying the breeding colonies of California Gulls in Mono Lake since 1983?

This project is a #longtermdataset that began in the early 1980s as a partnership with @monolakeca, Inyo National Forest, and @castateparks. At the time, the California Gull population and the entire Mono Lake ecosystem was being threatened by water diversion projects in the area; and subsequent low water levels in the lake. The California Gull is what we call “sentinel species.” As upper members of the food chain, this species is an indicator of the overall health of the Mono Lake ecosystem. Studying the population can provide valuable insights on how to properly maintain water levels in the area.

Forty years ago, our scientists began collecting data on the California Gull to monitor and protect the species and to better inform conservation and land management efforts in the Mono Lake area. Today, we have nearly 40 years of data on this sentinel species and the breeding grounds they return to year after year.

Fun fact: in recent years, Point Blue scientists have been utilizing drones to do conservation work in Mono Lake! Our team takes aerial shots of nesting sites and uses that information to measure reproductive success.

Stream restoration is a huge part of the Mono Lake Stream restoration is a huge part of the Mono Lake Committee's mission, and one of our biggest success stories! Staff regularly monitor the water levels within two of the five tributary streams.
