The season is winding down, birds are heading south to their wintering grounds, and fall is just around the corner. Our next two months of guided trips will focus on catching up with those birds before they disappear and also turning our attention to the ghosts that never leave: the historic places and buildings that tell almost invisible tales of the Mono Basin that existed many years ago. Come explore the shores of Mono Lake with us and refocus your eyes towards the past to imagine what life here was like long before we were born.
Here’s a look at our guided trips in September:
Wednesday, September 7: Natural History Ramble brings a holistic approach to spending time outside. The Mono Basin has beautiful and diverse habitats, as well as ample opportunities to observe wildlife, wildflowers, and wild views. Hike with a naturalist guide and learn to identify local plants, birds, mammals, clouds, rocks, you name it! 8:00am–12:00noon. $65 for members, $75 for non-members. Sign-up today!
We have TWO Mining the Past Through Binoculars trips in September! The first is a full day trip that visits Bodie State Historic Park and the second is a half-day trip that will stay in the Mono Basin focusing on Paiute history, and the miners and ranchers that supported Bodie’s operations and persisted after Bodie faded away.
Thursday, September 15: Mining the Past Through Binoculars will spend the day learning about history while keeping an eye out for wildlife. The Mono Basin is rich with Native American, mining, logging, and ranching history. In this program, we will spend the day visiting different historic locations while learning both about the stories behind them and the critters that inhabit them now. This trip will visit Bodie State Historic Park in the afternoon. 8:00am–4:00pm. $125 for members, $135 for non-members. Sign-up today!
