Water is a subject near and dear to us here at the Mono Lake Committee. It is the source of all life on our planet and the cause of both success and struggle for human beings. Newly added to the Committee’s online store are two books that take a look at water and what a changing climate means for this precious resource.
Tim Palmer spent the better part of a year seeking out California’s most formidable peaks to tell a story of disappearing natural beauty in California Glaciers. With photographs both elegant and majestic accompanied by thought-provoking text, Palmer pays tribute to California’s glaciers as they rapidly become a thing of the past. Each photographed landscape of rock and ice speaks volumes to its ancient strength and the tragedy of its loss to climate change. California Glaciers is a beautiful coffee table book with an important message sure to strike a chord with the environmentally-conscious and those whose hearts reside in the mountains.
William deBuys’ A Great Aridness examines water through a different lens. With the voice of a researcher and storyteller, deBuys writes of the past, present, and future of the American Southwest—an arid land living on borrowed time. The issues at hand in the Southwest not only illustrate the looming effects of climate change in our own backyard, but bring attention to the possibilities for similar landscapes around the world facing this global problem. A Great Aridness is an important book for anyone who lives in or loves the American Southwest and for those who wish to better understand the value of water.
