Friends of Mono Lake’s state park–the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve–gathered over the weekend to show their support for keeping Mono Lake open!

Today Mono Lake Committee staff have the rally photo above on display in Sacramento–and during visits to legislators–as part of the “Save Our State Parks Rally” happening at the state capitol.
The Mono Lake Reserve currently provides critical Mono Lake management and protection programs, and it operates with the support of thousands of volunteer hours and substantial private fundraising, all of which would be lost under the current plan to close the park at the end of 2011. In fact, given the minimal current cost of operation, it is likely that the park will cost the state as much or more in closed “caretaker” status as it does to be open!
