Missed state budget deadline adds to State Park closure threat

July 1st, 2009 by Geoff, Executive Director

State Park Closure Action Alert CenterThe month of June is over and California does not have a revised budget for the new fiscal year, despite late night emergency activities in Sacramento.

This deepens the threat to State Parks at Mono Lake, Bodie, and across the state. Here’s how:

  1. The Governor’s poorly conceived proposal to close 80% of state parks remains on the table (read the details in our Action Alert center).
  2. The Governor has vowed to veto a majority-passed package of budget measures that include new dedicated funding that saves our State Parks via a vehicle registration fee and State Park Access Pass program.
  3. By missing the budget deadline, the Governor and legislators missed a window to make approx $3.3 billion in cuts that they were counting on. Now those savings must be made up elsewhere.

As the budget crisis deepens your letter of support for State Parks continues to be important! Complete one online today and we will hand deliver it to the political leadership in Sacramento.
